Preventative vs. Reactive Healthcare: Why Prevention is Key

28/02/2024

Preventative healthcare focuses on identifying and addressing potential health issues before they develop into serious conditions. This proactive approach involves regular check-ups, screenings, vaccinations, and lifestyle modifications aimed at maintaining optimal health and preventing diseases. The Importance of Early Detection One of the primary goals of preventative healthcare is early detection. By identifying risk factors and addressing them promptly, preventative care aims to mitigate the development of chronic conditions and reduce the likelihood of complications. Routine screenings for conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and cancer can lead to early intervention, significantly improving treatment outcomes and reducing healthcare costs associated with advanced disease stages. Reactive Healthcare: Treating Symptoms After They Occur In contrast, reactive healthcare involves treating illnesses or health problems after they have already manifested. While reactive care is essential for managing acute conditions and providing immediate treatment for health emergencies, it often comes at a higher cost and may result in poorer health outcomes compared to preventative measures. The Cost of Reactive Care Reactive healthcare tends to focus on symptom management and disease treatment rather than addressing underlying causes or preventing future occurrences. This approach can lead to higher healthcare costs in the long term, as individuals may require expensive medical treatments, hospitalizations, and emergency care for untreated or advanced diseases. Empowering Individuals Through Prevention Preventative healthcare empowers individuals to take an active role in managing their health and well-being. By adopting healthy habits such as regular exercise, balanced diet, and stress management, individuals can reduce their risk of developing chronic conditions and enhance their overall quality of life. Preventative care also encourages early intervention and timely screenings, fostering a proactive approach to health maintenance and disease prevention. Investing in Prevention In conclusion, preventative healthcare offers numerous benefits compared to reactive approaches, emphasizing the importance of early detection, intervention, and lifestyle modifications in maintaining optimal health and preventing diseases. By prioritizing prevention, individuals can reduce healthcare costs, improve health outcomes, and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. Investing in preventative measures today can yield significant dividends in terms of long-term health and well-being, making prevention truly key to achieving better health outcomes for individuals and communities alike. Breaking Down 7 Myths About Health Check-ups

20/02/2024

Health check-ups are essential for maintaining good health and preventing potential health issues. However, various myths and misconceptions surround these routine examinations, which can deter individuals from seeking preventive care. Let's debunk some of the common myths and misconceptions about health check-ups: Myth 1: "I Feel Fine, So I Don't Need a Check-up" Reality: Feeling fine doesn't necessarily mean you're in perfect health. Many health conditions, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, may not present noticeable symptoms initially. Health check-ups help detect these silent conditions early, allowing for timely interventions and preventing potential complications. Myth 2: "I'm Young and Healthy, I Don't Need Check-ups" Reality: Age is not a determining factor for needing health check-ups. Regular check-ups are essential for individuals of all ages to monitor their health status, detect potential issues early, and establish healthy habits. Preventive care is especially crucial for laying the foundation for long-term health and well-being. Myth 3: "Health Check-ups Are Only for Sick People" Reality: Health check-ups are not just for addressing illness; they're primarily for preventive care. Routine examinations help identify risk factors, screen for diseases, and promote early detection of health issues before they become serious. Preventive care is key to maintaining optimal health and preventing future health problems. Myth 4: "I Don't Have Time for Check-ups" Reality: While busy schedules may make it challenging to prioritize health check-ups, investing time in preventive care can save time and hassle in the long run. Many healthcare providers offer flexible scheduling options, including weekend or evening appointments, and telemedicine services that allow for remote consultations, making it easier to fit check-ups into your schedule. Myth 5: "Check-ups Are Expensive" Reality: While there may be costs associated with health check-ups, many preventive services are covered by health insurance plans. Additionally, investing in preventive care can lead to cost savings by preventing costly medical treatments or hospitalizations resulting from undetected health issues. Myth 6: "Check-ups Are Unnecessary if I Have No Family History of Illness" Reality: While family history can influence your risk of certain health conditions, it's not the sole determinant of your health. Many health issues are influenced by lifestyle factors, environmental factors, and individual health habits. Health check-ups assess overall health status and help identify risk factors, regardless of family history. Myth 7: "Once I've Had One Check-up, I Don't Need Another" Reality: Health check-ups should be conducted regularly, as recommended by healthcare professionals, to ensure ongoing monitoring of health status and early detection of potential health issues. The frequency of check-ups may vary based on age, health status, and individual risk factors. In conclusion, debunking myths and misconceptions about health check-ups is crucial for promoting preventive care and encouraging individuals to prioritize their health. By understanding the importance of routine examinations and addressing common misconceptions, individuals can take proactive steps toward maintaining optimal health and well-being throughout their lives. The Top 10 Tests You Should Include in Your Health Check-up

07/02/2024

Regular health check-ups are essential for maintaining optimal health and detecting potential health issues early. Including specific medical tests as part of your routine check-up can provide valuable insights into your overall well-being and help identify any underlying health concerns.  Here are the top 10 tests you should consider including in your health check-up: Blood Pressure Measurement Checking blood pressure is crucial for assessing cardiovascular health. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications. Monitoring blood pressure regularly helps identify hypertension early and allows for timely intervention through lifestyle changes or medication. Cholesterol Levels (Lipid Profile) A lipid profile measures levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. High cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Screening for cholesterol levels helps assess cardiovascular risk and guide interventions such as dietary modifications, exercise, or medication to manage cholesterol levels. Blood Glucose (Blood Sugar) Test Monitoring blood glucose levels is essential for detecting diabetes or prediabetes. High blood sugar levels indicate impaired glucose metabolism, which can lead to diabetes if left untreated. Early detection allows for lifestyle modifications and interventions to prevent or manage diabetes effectively. Complete Blood Count (CBC) A complete blood count evaluates various components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. CBC helps diagnose conditions such as anemia, infections, and blood disorders. It provides valuable insights into overall health and helps identify underlying medical conditions. Thyroid Function Tests Thyroid function tests assess the levels of thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, T4) in the blood. Thyroid dysfunction can lead to various health issues, including fatigue, weight changes, and mood disturbances. Monitoring thyroid function helps diagnose thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism and guides appropriate treatment. Liver Function Tests (LFTs) Liver function tests evaluate liver enzymes and proteins in the blood, providing insights into liver health. Abnormal LFT results may indicate liver damage or dysfunction, which can result from various causes such as alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis, or fatty liver disease. Monitoring liver function helps diagnose liver disorders and guides management strategies. Kidney Function Tests (Renal Panel) Kidney function tests assess the levels of creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and other markers of kidney function in the blood. Abnormal kidney function tests may indicate kidney disease or impaired kidney function. Monitoring kidney function helps detect kidney disorders early and guides interventions to prevent kidney damage. Bone Density Test (DEXA Scan) A bone density test, also known as a DEXA scan, measures bone mineral density and assesses the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. It helps diagnose osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weakened bones, and guides preventive measures such as dietary changes, exercise, and medication to maintain bone health. Colon Cancer Screening (Colonoscopy or Fecal Occult Blood Test) Colon cancer screening aims to detect colorectal cancer or precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum. Colonoscopy and fecal occult blood tests are common screening methods used to identify abnormalities in the colon. Early detection through colon cancer screening improves treatment outcomes and reduces mortality from colorectal cancer. Breast Cancer Screening (Mammography) Mammography is a screening test used to detect breast cancer in its early stages. It involves imaging the breast tissue to identify abnormal changes such as lumps or calcifications. Regular mammograms help detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable, and increase the chances of successful treatment and survival. Including these essential medical tests in your health check-up provides a comprehensive assessment of your health and helps identify any potential health concerns early. Regular monitoring and early detection enable timely interventions and preventive measures, contributing to better health outcomes and overall well-being. Health Check-ups for Children: Ensuring a Healthy Start in Life

21/12/2023

Health check-ups for children are fundamental in ensuring their healthy development and well-being right from the start. These routine examinations are essential for monitoring growth, detecting potential health issues early, and providing necessary interventions to support children's optimal health. Regular health check-ups for children typically begin shortly after birth and continue through adolescence, following a recommended schedule outlined by healthcare providers. These check-ups serve as comprehensive evaluations that encompass various aspects of a child's health, including physical growth, developmental milestones, immunizations, and screenings for potential health concerns. One of the primary purposes of health check-ups for children is to track their growth and development. Healthcare professionals assess a child's height, weight, head circumference (in infants), and other developmental milestones at each check-up. These measurements help identify any deviations from the expected growth patterns, allowing for early intervention if growth issues arise. Moreover, health check-ups for children include vaccinations according to recommended schedules. Immunizations protect children from potentially severe or life-threatening diseases, contributing to their overall health and reducing the risk of outbreaks within communities. These vaccinations are administered at specific ages to ensure children are adequately protected from various infectious diseases. These routine examinations also serve as opportunities for healthcare providers to screen for and detect potential health concerns. Vision and hearing screenings, blood tests, and assessments for conditions like anemia or developmental delays are part of these check-ups. Early identification of such issues allows for timely interventions, which can significantly impact a child's long-term health outcomes. In addition to physical health, mental and behavioral health assessments are often integrated into these check-ups. Healthcare providers evaluate a child's social and emotional development, addressing any concerns or behavioral issues that may require attention. Early identification and intervention in mental health issues contribute to healthier psychosocial development in children. Furthermore, health check-ups for children involve guidance and support for parents or caregivers. Healthcare professionals offer advice on nutrition, safety measures, injury prevention, and strategies to promote a healthy lifestyle for children. These consultations empower parents with the knowledge and resources necessary to support their child's well-being beyond the doctor's office. Overall, health check-ups for children play a crucial role in laying the foundation for a healthy life. Corporate Wellness Programs: The Role of Health Check-ups in Employee Health

12/12/2023

Corporate wellness programs have evolved into comprehensive initiatives that prioritize employee well-being. Health check-ups are a cornerstone of these programs, playing a pivotal role in promoting and maintaining the health of employees. They serve as proactive measures to assess and address potential health concerns, contributing significantly to the overall success and effectiveness of corporate wellness strategies. Health check-ups within corporate wellness programs offer employees a structured approach to monitor their health status regularly. These check-ups typically include screenings, physical examinations, and assessments conducted by healthcare professionals. They provide employees with insights into their current health conditions, empowering them to make informed decisions about their well-being. One of the primary benefits of incorporating health check-ups into corporate wellness programs is the early detection of health issues. Identifying potential health risks or conditions in their initial stages allows for timely interventions. Early detection through these check-ups can prevent the progression of health concerns, reducing the likelihood of more serious illnesses that could lead to increased absenteeism and decreased productivity. Moreover, health check-ups encourage a proactive approach to health among employees. By participating in regular assessments, individuals become more aware of their health status and are motivated to adopt healthier lifestyles. These check-ups often include counseling or educational sessions that provide guidance on nutrition, exercise, stress management, and other health-related topics, empowering employees to take control of their well-being. Corporate wellness programs that integrate health check-ups contribute to a positive work environment. Employees feel valued when their employer invests in initiatives that prioritize their health. This fosters a culture of well-being and shows that the company is committed to supporting its employees beyond work-related matters, leading to increased job satisfaction and morale. Furthermore, health check-ups within corporate wellness programs can result in cost savings for both employees and employers. Early identification and management of health issues can prevent more extensive medical treatments, reducing healthcare costs. Additionally, healthier employees are generally more productive, leading to lower absenteeism rates and higher work efficiency, which benefits the company's bottom line. These programs also serve as a preventive measure against chronic conditions. Regular health assessments enable employees to track their health metrics over time, allowing them to make proactive choices to prevent the onset or worsening of chronic diseases, ultimately reducing the burden on the healthcare system and improving overall public health. In essence, health check-ups are integral components of corporate wellness programs. They promote a proactive approach to employee health, encourage healthier lifestyles, foster a positive work environment, and contribute to cost savings for both employees and employers. By prioritizing employee well-being through regular health assessments, companies can create a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce. The often overlooked benefit of regular health check-ups: lower insurance premiums

06/12/2023

The often overlooked benefit of regular health check-ups: lower insurance premiums We’ve previously written about some of the advantages of regular health check-ups, including financial benefits. But did you know that by having regular health check-ups, you can potentially benefit from lower health insurance premiums? Health insurance plans often incentivize preventive care as a means to encourage policyholders to prioritize their health. One of the significant advantages offered by many insurance providers is the opportunity to lower insurance premiums through active engagement in preventive care, including routine health check-ups. By capitalizing on these benefits, individuals can significantly reduce their overall healthcare costs while ensuring better health outcomes in the long run. Many insurance companies acknowledge the importance of preventive healthcare in averting more serious and expensive health issues down the line. As a result, they offer incentives to policyholders who participate in preventive measures, such as routine health check-ups, screenings, vaccinations, and health assessments. Policyholders who actively engage in preventive care by attending regular check-ups are often eligible for reduced insurance premiums or discounts. Insurance providers recognize that preventive care not only benefits the individual's health but also minimizes the financial burden on the healthcare system by averting the need for costly interventions associated with advanced illnesses or chronic conditions. Participating in routine health check-ups aligns with the insurance industry's philosophy of risk mitigation. Insurance companies view proactive healthcare measures as a way to mitigate the risk of higher claims stemming from untreated or poorly managed health issues. As a result, they incentivize policyholders who take charge of their health by actively participating in preventive care. These incentives often come in the form of reduced premiums or co-payments for services related to preventive care. By regularly attending check-ups, policyholders not only contribute to their own well-being but also benefit from cost savings on their insurance plans. Moreover, by promoting preventive care, insurance companies aim to foster a healthier customer base. A healthier pool of policyholders generally leads to lower overall healthcare expenses for the insurer, which can be reflected in reduced premiums for individuals who actively engage in preventive measures like routine check-ups. Participating in preventive care isn't just about immediate cost savings; it's an investment in long-term health and financial well-being. By taking advantage of incentives offered by insurance providers, individuals not only save on premiums but also potentially avoid more extensive healthcare costs associated with undetected or poorly managed health issues. In conclusion, lower insurance premiums offered to policyholders who actively engage in preventive care, including routine check-ups, serve as a win-win scenario. It encourages individuals to prioritize their health while simultaneously reducing their overall healthcare expenses. Embracing preventive care measures not only leads to immediate cost savings but also contributes to a healthier and more financially secure future. *Image credit: Sibeal Artworks from Pixabay N.B. You should always check with your individual insurance provider to see whether you can benefit from lower premiums by having regular health check-ups. Every situation is different and applicability will always be determined on a case by case basis.

Senior Health: Promoting Well-being Through Regular Check-ups

24/11/2023

As individuals age, their health needs change, often necessitating a more comprehensive and tailored approach to healthcare. Senior health encompasses a range of unique concerns, from managing chronic conditions to maintaining mobility and mental well-being. Regular check-ups play a pivotal role in promoting the well-being of seniors, facilitating early detection, management, and prevention of age-related health issues, thus contributing significantly to their independence and quality of life. One of the primary focuses of senior health check-ups is the management of chronic conditions that become more prevalent with age. Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and osteoporosis often require continuous monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans. Regular check-ups enable healthcare providers to assess the progression of these conditions, make necessary alterations in medications or lifestyle recommendations, and prevent complications that could affect seniors' independence. Furthermore, regular health check-ups for seniors encompass screenings and assessments specifically tailored to detect age-related diseases. These may include screenings for cognitive decline, vision and hearing loss, cancer, bone density, and immunizations against diseases such as influenza and pneumonia. Early detection through these screenings allows for timely interventions, potentially preventing the advancement of certain conditions and maintaining seniors' autonomy. Mobility and functional ability are critical components of independent living for seniors. Health check-ups often include evaluations of balance, strength, and flexibility. Identifying issues related to mobility early on allows healthcare providers to recommend exercises, physical therapy, or assistive devices that can help seniors maintain their mobility and prevent falls, which can have severe consequences in older age. Mental health is another crucial aspect addressed during senior health check-ups. Conditions like depression and anxiety can often go unnoticed or untreated in older adults. Regular check-ups provide an opportunity for healthcare providers to assess seniors' mental well-being, offer support, and intervene if necessary, thus improving their overall quality of life. Preventive care is paramount in senior health. Regular check-ups not only address existing health concerns but also focus on preventive measures to reduce the risk of future health issues. Lifestyle counseling, such as advice on nutrition, exercise, and smoking cessation, is commonly integrated into these check-ups, empowering seniors to make healthier choices that can positively impact their well-being. Moreover, regular health check-ups for seniors foster a strong doctor-patient relationship. This connection allows healthcare providers to understand their patients' needs, preferences, and values, leading to more personalized care and informed decision-making regarding treatment options. In essence, promoting well-being through regular check-ups is integral to senior health. These check-ups serve as a proactive approach to maintaining health, managing existing conditions, and preventing potential complications that could jeopardize seniors' independence and quality of life. By addressing the unique health concerns of seniors holistically, regular check-ups empower them to age with dignity, vitality, and a higher level of autonomy, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives as they navigate the aging process. Mental Health Check-ups: Caring for Your Mind and Body

20/11/2023

Caring for your overall well-being extends beyond physical health; it encompasses mental health as an integral part of a balanced and fulfilling life. Mental health check-ups are crucial in maintaining a harmonious relationship between the mind and body, ensuring a holistic approach to one's health. Often overlooked or stigmatized, mental health check-ups play a pivotal role in identifying, managing, and preventing psychological concerns. When we consider healthcare, it's essential to view mental health with the same gravity as physical health. Mental health check-ups involve assessments by professionals trained to recognize signs of stress, anxiety, depression, or other psychological conditions. These check-ups provide an opportunity for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive environment, enabling early detection of potential issues. One of the significant advantages of mental health check-ups lies in their ability to detect problems at their nascent stages. Addressing mental health concerns early on can prevent these issues from escalating into more severe conditions that may require intensive treatment or hospitalization. Through routine check-ups, individuals can access timely interventions, which may include therapy, counseling, or medication if necessary. Moreover, mental health check-ups contribute to destigmatizing mental health concerns. By normalizing discussions around mental well-being, these check-ups encourage open conversations and awareness about mental health, fostering a more compassionate and understanding society. They create a platform where individuals feel comfortable seeking help without fear of judgment or discrimination. Caring for your mind is intricately linked to caring for your body. Mental health significantly influences physical health outcomes. Chronic stress, for example, can manifest in various physical ailments, including cardiovascular issues, gastrointestinal problems, and weakened immune responses. Therefore, regular mental health check-ups contribute not only to emotional stability but also to better physical health outcomes. Just as we schedule routine physical check-ups, incorporating mental health check-ups into our healthcare regimen is equally vital. It's a proactive approach to maintaining a healthy mind, akin to exercising or eating a balanced diet for physical well-being. These check-ups serve as a preventative measure, helping individuals develop coping strategies and resilience to manage life's challenges effectively. Ultimately, mental health check-ups are about nurturing a positive relationship with oneself. They empower individuals to take control of their mental well-being, promoting self-awareness and self-care. By recognizing the importance of mental health check-ups and embracing them as a fundamental aspect of healthcare, individuals pave the way for a more fulfilling, balanced, and resilient life—one where the mind and body work in harmony toward optimal health and happiness. The Financial Benefits of Health Check-ups

09/11/2023

Health check-ups are not only essential for your overall well-being but can also prove to be a smart financial decision. Many people often perceive healthcare costs as an expense, but in reality, investing in regular health check-ups can save you a significant amount of money in the long run. Let's delve into some of the financial benefits of health check-ups and how they contribute to long-term cost savings. Early Disease Detection: Health check-ups are designed to identify health issues in their early stages. Detecting a condition at an early stage often means simpler and more cost-effective treatments. For instance, discovering high blood pressure early through routine check-ups can lead to lifestyle changes and medication, which is far less expensive than treating the consequences of uncontrolled hypertension like heart attacks or strokes. Prevention is Cheaper than Cure: Preventive care, which includes vaccinations, screenings, and health check-ups, is less expensive than dealing with a full-blown illness or chronic condition. For example, vaccinations are a cost-effective way to prevent serious diseases such as flu, hepatitis, and certain types of cancer. Reduced Emergency Room Visits: Neglecting regular health check-ups can result in unexpected, costly visits to the emergency room when health conditions worsen. These emergency visits can be avoided through regular preventive care, saving you from expensive medical bills. Lower Medication Costs: Health check-ups can help monitor chronic conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol. By managing these conditions effectively, you can reduce the need for costly medications or complications related to uncontrolled illnesses. Lower Insurance Premiums: Some health insurance plans offer discounts or incentives for policyholders who actively engage in preventive care, including routine check-ups. By taking advantage of these benefits, you can lower your overall healthcare costs. Decreased Productivity Loss: Falling seriously ill can result in extended periods of missed work, which can have a direct impact on your income. Regular health check-ups can help you maintain good health, reducing the likelihood of major illnesses that can lead to significant productivity losses. Avoiding Expensive Surgeries: Detecting and managing health issues early can often prevent the need for expensive surgical procedures. For example, identifying and treating gallstones early can prevent the need for costly gallbladder removal surgery. Peace of Mind: Regular health check-ups can provide peace of mind. Knowing that you are in good health and receiving reassurance from your healthcare provider can reduce stress and anxiety, which can have financial benefits in terms of improved mental well-being. In conclusion, the financial benefits of health check-ups cannot be overstated. By investing in preventive care, you not only protect your health but also your financial stability. The old saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," certainly applies when it comes to healthcare. Taking proactive measures through regular health check-ups is a small price to pay for the substantial cost savings and the priceless gift of good health and peace of mind. So, make sure to schedule your next health check-up, not just as an expense, but as a smart financial move that will benefit you in the long run. When to Seek a Second Medical Opinion: Red Flags and Scenarios

06/10/2023

When it comes to your health, decisions about diagnoses and treatment plans are often life-altering. While most healthcare professionals are dedicated to providing the best care possible, the complexity of medicine means that misdiagnoses or suboptimal treatment options can occur. This is where seeking a second medical opinion becomes crucial, and understanding when to do so can make all the difference. Complex or Rare Diagnoses One of the most compelling reasons to consider a second medical opinion is when faced with a complex or rare medical condition. These conditions often challenge even the most experienced healthcare providers, and consulting with multiple experts can lead to a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. For instance, a rare genetic disorder or an unusual presentation of a common condition might warrant seeking additional perspectives. Serious or Life-Threatening Diagnoses When the stakes are high, such as in cases of serious or life-threatening illnesses like cancer, heart disease, or neurological disorders, it's prudent to explore all available options. Seeking a second opinion can provide peace of mind and ensure that the recommended treatment aligns with the best available evidence and expert consensus. Dissatisfaction with Current Treatment Plans If you find yourself feeling uneasy about your current treatment plan or you believe it isn't delivering the expected results, it's a valid reason to seek a second medical opinion. This is particularly important in chronic conditions where the treatment may need adjustments over time. A fresh perspective can uncover alternative approaches that may be more effective or better suited to your individual needs. Questions About Surgery Decisions regarding surgery should be approached with caution. If surgery is recommended, especially for complex or invasive procedures, seeking a second opinion is advisable. This can confirm the necessity of the surgery, explore less invasive options, or ensure that you are fully informed about the risks and benefits. Medication Side Effects or Allergic Reactions Experiencing unexpected or severe side effects from prescribed medications can be distressing. In such cases, it's essential to consult with another healthcare provider to evaluate whether the medication is appropriate for you or if there are safer alternatives. Persistent or Worsening Symptoms When your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment, it could indicate an underlying issue that hasn't been addressed. Seeking a second opinion can help uncover the root cause of your health problems and prevent unnecessary suffering or complications. Complex Treatment Plans In cases where treatment plans involve multiple medications, therapies, or lifestyle changes, seeking a second opinion can provide clarity. It can help you ensure that the treatment regimen is well-coordinated, evidence-based, and aligns with your overall health goals. Concerns About Misdiagnosis If you suspect that you may have been misdiagnosed or have received conflicting opinions from different healthcare providers, seeking a second medical opinion is not only a right but a responsibility to your health. Misdiagnoses can lead to delayed or incorrect treatments, potentially causing harm. Peace of Mind and Confidence Sometimes, the decision to seek a second opinion is not based on specific concerns but rather a desire for peace of mind. Healthcare decisions are deeply personal, and you have the right to feel confident and fully informed about your treatment choices. A second opinion can offer reassurance and confidence in your healthcare journey. Final Thoughts In conclusion, knowing when to seek a second medical opinion is as crucial as the decision itself. It is not a sign of mistrust in your healthcare provider but rather a proactive approach to ensure the best possible care and outcomes. Ultimately, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking additional perspectives when facing significant medical decisions can lead to more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatments, ultimately improving your quality of life. Patient-Centered Care: The Shift Towards Empowering Healthcare Consumers

22/09/2023

In the evolving landscape of modern healthcare, a fundamental paradigm shift is underway - from a traditional, provider-centric model to one that revolves around the patient. This transformation, often referred to as "patient-centered care," places the individual at the heart of their healthcare journey, giving them a more active and empowered role in decisions about their health and treatment.  In this blog, we will explore the concept of patient-centered care, its key principles, benefits, and the impact it has on healthcare consumers. Understanding Patient-Centered Care Patient-centered care is an approach that prioritizes the patient's needs, preferences, and values in all aspects of healthcare. It recognizes that healthcare is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor and that each patient is unique. This approach seeks to create a partnership between healthcare providers and patients, where individuals actively participate in their case decisions. Key Principles of Patient-Centered Care Respect for Patients' Values and Preferences: Healthcare providers acknowledge and respect the individual values, preferences, and cultural backgrounds of their patients when making treatment decisions. Information Sharing: Patients are provided with clear, understandable information about their health conditions, treatment options, and potential outcomes. This enables them to make informed decisions. Shared Decision-Making: Patients are encouraged to actively participate in decisions about their healthcare. Providers facilitate discussions, present options, and engage in shared decision-making processes. Holistic Care: Patient-centered care recognizes that healthcare should address not only the physical aspects of illness but also emotional, social, and psychological well-being. Empathy and Compassion: Healthcare providers show empathy and compassion towards their patients, understanding their emotions, fears, and concerns. The Benefits of Patient-Centered Care Improved Health Outcomes: Patient engagement and active involvement in care decisions often lead to better adherence to treatment plans, resulting in improved health outcomes. Enhanced Patient Satisfaction: Patients who feel heard, respected, and involved in their care tend to be more satisfied with their healthcare experiences. Reduced Healthcare Costs: Empowered patients are more likely to seek preventive care, leading to early detection and intervention, ultimately reducing healthcare costs. Efficient Resource Utilization: When patients are actively engaged in their care, healthcare resources are used more efficiently as treatments align with patients' values and preferences. Greater Trust in Healthcare Providers: Patient-centered care fosters trust between patients and healthcare providers, strengthening the therapeutic relationship. The Role of Technology in Empowering Healthcare Consumers Electronic Health Records (EHRs): EHRs provide patients with easy access to their medical records, allowing them to review their health information, track changes, and become more informed about their conditions. Telehealth and mHealth Apps: Telehealth and mobile health apps empower patients to monitor their health, schedule virtual visits, and communicate with healthcare providers conveniently. Health Information Portals: Online portals provide patients with access to educational materials, appointment scheduling, and secure messaging with healthcare teams. Wearable Health Devices: Wearables like fitness trackers and smartwatches allow individuals to monitor vital signs, physical activity, and sleep patterns, promoting proactive health management. Challenges in Implementing Patient-Centered Care Time Constraints: Healthcare providers may face time constraints that limit their ability to engage in lengthy shared decision-making discussions. Health Literacy: Not all patients have the same level of health literacy, which can affect their ability to participate fully in their care. Cultural Competence: Ensuring that care is culturally sensitive and appropriate for diverse patient populations can be challenging. Final Thoughts Patient-centered care is not merely a buzzword but a transformative approach to healthcare that places patients in the driver's seat of their health journey. By actively involving individuals in their care decisions, respecting their values, and leveraging technology, healthcare is becoming more personalized, efficient, and effective. This shift towards empowering healthcare consumers marks a significant step forward in the quest for better health outcomes and more satisfying healthcare experiences. Ultimately, it fosters a healthcare system that truly revolves around the needs and aspirations of the people it serves. *Photo by Karolina Grabowska via Pexels

Nearly half of Brits unsatisfied with UK healthcare, new ONS figures reveal

14/07/2023

The NHS is celebrating its 75th anniversary this month. The UK’s healthcare system, which treats around 1.3 million people a day just in England, has been at the core of public health since 1948. However, new government figures reveal just over half of Brits (53.9%) are happy with the UK’s health system and 9% fewer people are satisfied with their own health than when the survey started in 2010. The UK Measures of National Well-being Dashboard from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), shows Brits feel their general wellbeing has declined in recent years. As the NHS celebrates a milestone, only half of the UK’s population are happy with the healthcare system. Furthermore, the percentage of UK adults who are mostly or completely satisfied with their health has declined 8.6% since the first such poll in 2010. Meanwhile, reported evidence of depression or anxiety was 23.7% between 2020 and 2021, the highest it has been since 2009-2010. Tim Vizard, from the ONS, said: “We have been exploring people’s wellbeing for over a decade now to understand how society is changing and what matters most to people. “A lot has changed over the last 10 years, including most recently the coronavirus pandemic and increases to the cost of living. Today we have published new insights to reflect what matters to people across the UK. “Measuring how we are doing as a society goes beyond economic measures and capturing this is a vital part of our work, looking beyond measures such as GDP.” We wrote back in January about how an increasing number of Brits are resorting to medical treatment abroad amid long NHS waiting lists. The latest ONS figures provide further insights into why this may be the case. *Image by Parentingupstream from Pixabay

France to reimburse patients’ remote monitoring costs

06/07/2023

France has become the first European country to reimburse the costs associated with remote monitoring of patients with chronic medical conditions. The initiative aims to reduce hospitalizations and enhance patient well-being. Starting from July 1, the country's health insurance scheme, Assurance Maladie, has begun refunding the expenses incurred during these remote checks, which are sometimes conducted through video calls. What is medical remote monitoring? Medical remote monitoring, known as "télésurveillance médicale" in French, involves the use of video or biomedical devices to allow healthcare professionals to monitor a patient's condition. This can include devices such as glycemic monitors, pacemakers, or other biomedical tools. It's important to note that télésurveillance médicale differs from téléconsultation, which refers to doctor appointments conducted via video. However, video calls may be incorporated into medical remote monitoring if necessary. Distance monitoring eliminates the need for patients to make frequent in-person visits to healthcare practitioners or rush to the hospital in case of an issue. Instead, patients may need to perform specific regular tasks at home and report the results to their doctor. For instance, they might be required to measure their blood pressure, monitor their weight, and complete a brief questionnaire every week, with the data being sent to their doctor. One patient, Jean-Louis Bernard, aged 74 from Caen, shared his experience with Le Monde, stating, "When you have a chronic illness, your condition can rapidly deteriorate, and if you're not careful, you may end up in the emergency room, even after consuming a meal that's too salty. Thanks to this tool, medical teams can respond to even the slightest alert and advise me remotely." His wife, Michelle, emphasized the invaluable assistance provided by remote monitoring, as it has prevented Jean-Louis from being hospitalized since he started using it, whereas hospitalizations were previously frequent. Why has reimbursement been extended to all individuals in need? The decision to make remote monitoring reimbursements accessible to all aims to achieve the following objectives: - Enhance the quality of care for patients undergoing distance monitoring. - Reduce hospitalizations and emergency room admissions by enabling patients to receive care at home. - Update healthcare processes and enhance care organization. - Improve patients' quality of life and overall comfort. Which conditions are eligible for distance monitoring? Since 2014, remote medical monitoring has been covered on an experimental basis under the ETAPES program (Experiments de télémédecine pour l'amélioration des parcours en santé) for the following five conditions: - Chronic respiratory failure - Chronic heart failure - Chronic renal failure - Diabetes Cardiac arrhythmia requiring cardiac prostheses The ETAPES program has now concluded, and distance monitoring can be implemented for any patients whose healthcare professionals determine the necessity, particularly for those who are at risk of hospitalization or health complications. The Ministry of Health has emphasized that patients must be fully informed about the process and provide their consent for monitoring. Which healthcare professionals can offer télésurveillance? According to Assurance Maladie, any doctor can refer a patient for remote monitoring. However, only healthcare professionals "whose specialities are referred to in the ministerial decrees registering telemonitoring activities, whatever their sector of practice and their place of practice” are authorized to carry out remote medical monitoring. These professionals can operate from general practitioner surgeries, nursing homes, health centers, hospitals, or clinics. *Photo by John Valette via Pexels

Patient Empowerment through Second Medical Opinions: Taking Control of Your Health

29/06/2023

In today's complex healthcare landscape, seeking a second medical opinion has become an essential step for patients who want to take control of their health. This article explores the significance of second medical opinions in empowering patients, enabling them to make informed decisions about their healthcare and helping ensure the best possible outcomes. The Importance of Informed Decision-Making When faced with a significant medical diagnosis or treatment recommendation, seeking a second medical opinion allows patients to gather additional information and perspectives. This empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health by gaining a comprehensive understanding of their condition, available treatment options, and potential risks and benefits. Informed decision-making enables patients to actively participate in their healthcare journey and have a sense of ownership over their treatment plans. Validating Diagnoses and Treatment Plans A second medical opinion serves as a valuable tool in validating initial diagnoses and treatment plans. It provides an opportunity for an independent assessment of the patient's medical condition, ensuring accuracy and minimizing the risk of misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment. By seeking multiple expert opinions, patients can gain confidence and peace of mind in their diagnosis, reducing doubts and uncertainties that may arise from conflicting information. Expanding Treatment Options Second medical opinions open up the possibility of exploring alternative treatment options that may not have been initially considered. Different healthcare providers may bring diverse perspectives and expertise, offering insights into innovative therapies, clinical trials, or less invasive treatment approaches. This expanded range of treatment options empowers patients to make choices aligned with their preferences, values, and desired outcomes, fostering a patient-centered approach to care. Building Trust and Confidence Seeking a second medical opinion helps build trust and confidence in the healthcare system. It reinforces the patient-doctor relationship by demonstrating that the patient's well-being and autonomy are prioritized. Patients feel empowered when healthcare providers support their decision to seek additional perspectives, fostering a collaborative and trusting environment. Increased trust and confidence positively impact patient engagement, adherence to treatment plans, and overall satisfaction with their healthcare experience. Navigating Complex and Rare Conditions For patients with complex or rare conditions, second medical opinions are particularly valuable. These cases often require specialized expertise and a comprehensive understanding of the latest advancements. Seeking multiple expert opinions helps patients access the knowledge and experience of specialists who have dealt with similar cases, providing a more accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment recommendations. Navigating complex and rare conditions becomes less daunting when patients have a network of medical professionals collaborating to develop a comprehensive care plan. Final Thoughts Seeking a second medical opinion empowers patients to take control of their health by making informed decisions, validating diagnoses and treatment plans, exploring diverse treatment options, and building trust in the healthcare system. As patients become active participants in their care, second opinions play a vital role in ensuring personalized, effective, and patient-centered healthcare. Telehealth and Wearable Devices: Empowering Patients in Self-Care

20/06/2023

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, telehealth has emerged as a transformative force, changing the way patients receive care. Coupled with wearable devices, telehealth offers a powerful combination that empowers patients to actively engage in their own self-care.  This article explores the intersection of telehealth and wearable devices, highlighting their impact on patient engagement, monitoring, and overall healthcare outcomes. The Rise of Wearable Devices Wearable devices, such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, and medical wearables, have gained significant popularity among consumers. These devices provide continuous monitoring, real-time data collection, and insights into individual health metrics. They have increasingly found integration into telehealth settings, allowing for remote patient monitoring and personalized healthcare delivery. While wearable devices offer numerous benefits for patients in self-care, challenges related to data accuracy, device interoperability, and user adoption must be addressed to fully harness their potential. Telehealth and Remote Patient Monitoring Telehealth platforms seamlessly incorporate wearable device data for remote patient monitoring. Continuous data collection and analysis through wearable devices facilitate proactive interventions, allowing for improved chronic disease management and preventive care. Real-life case studies have demonstrated the successful integration of wearable devices into telehealth programs, showcasing positive patient outcomes and enhanced healthcare experiences. Empowering Patients through Self-Monitoring Wearable devices play a pivotal role in encouraging self-monitoring and promoting healthy behaviors among patients. By providing real-time feedback on physical activity, sleep quality, and other health metrics, wearable devices motivate individuals to engage in regular exercise, maintain good sleep hygiene, and adopt healthier lifestyles. Patients can track a wide range of health parameters, including physical activity levels, sleep patterns, heart rate, and blood pressure. Furthermore, wearable devices leverage gamification elements and personalized feedback to enhance patient motivation and engagement, resulting in improved self-care adherence and long-term engagement. Enhancing Chronic Disease Management Wearable devices, when integrated with telehealth solutions, offer significant benefits for managing chronic conditions. For instance, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices enable remote monitoring of patients with diabetes, facilitating timely adjustments in medication or lifestyle interventions. Wearable blood pressure monitors assist in managing hypertension, while smart inhalers help monitor asthma symptoms and medication usage. These devices also improve medication adherence through reminders and alerts, reducing the risk of complications. Continuous monitoring of health metrics allows healthcare providers to detect early signs of health deteriorations, enabling timely interventions and preventing adverse events. Promoting Healthy Lifestyles and Preventive Care Wearable devices act as powerful tools for promoting healthy lifestyles and preventive care. They track physical fitness, weight management, stress levels, and other factors contributing to overall well-being. Integration with telehealth platforms enables personalized health recommendations and interventions based on collected data. Wearable devices can facilitate early detection and prevention of diseases by continuously monitoring health metrics and analyzing trends. By empowering individuals to make positive lifestyle choices and adopt healthier habits, wearable devices contribute to proactive health management and reduce healthcare costs in the long run. Final Thoughts Telehealth and wearable devices have revolutionized patient self-care, offering a personalized and proactive approach to healthcare. By incorporating wearable devices into telehealth practices, patients have the means to actively engage in their health management. However, privacy, security, and ethical considerations must be prioritized to ensure responsible use of wearable devices in self-care. As technology continues to advance, the integration of telehealth and wearable devices holds immense potential to improve patient outcomes and transform the future of healthcare. Why it’s important to see a doctor when you feel like something’s wrong

09/06/2023

Your body has an incredible ability to communicate with you, often alerting you when something doesn't feel quite right. Whether it's a persistent pain, an unusual symptom, or simply a gut feeling that something is off, paying attention to these signals is crucial for maintaining your health and well-being. In such situations, seeking prompt medical attention from a qualified doctor can make all the difference. This article highlights the importance of seeing a doctor when you suspect something might be wrong and why it is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Early detection improves prognosis One of the most significant reasons to consult a doctor when you have concerns about your health is the potential for early detection of serious conditions. Many illnesses and diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular problems, and chronic conditions, can manifest with subtle warning signs. By visiting a doctor promptly, you increase the likelihood of catching potential issues in their early stages, when they are often more treatable and have better prognoses. Accurate diagnosis and treatment When you try to self-diagnose or rely on unreliable sources, you run the risk of misidentifying your symptoms or underestimating their severity. Only a trained healthcare professional can conduct a thorough examination, review your medical history, and order appropriate tests to provide an accurate diagnosis. Timely and accurate diagnosis is the key to effective treatment. Without it, you may delay necessary interventions or resort to ineffective remedies, potentially exacerbating the problem and jeopardizing your health. Prevention and proactive healthcare Regular check-ups and preventive care are essential for maintaining optimal health. Even if you feel fine, routine medical visits allow doctors to monitor your well-being, identify potential risk factors, and suggest necessary lifestyle modifications to prevent future health issues. By seeing a doctor when you suspect something is wrong, you actively engage in proactive healthcare, prioritizing prevention rather than waiting for a crisis to occur. Prevention is not only more cost-effective but also leads to better health outcomes and a higher quality of life in the long run. Professional guidance and peace of mind Navigating the vast sea of medical information available on the internet can be overwhelming and misleading. Self-diagnosis and self-treatment based on unverified sources can lead to unnecessary anxiety or inadequate care. Consulting a doctor provides you with expert guidance based on years of medical education and experience. A healthcare professional can help alleviate your concerns, provide accurate information, and offer appropriate treatment options, giving you the peace of mind that comes from knowing you are in capable hands. A holistic approach to health Doctors are not just there to treat specific ailments; they are also trained to consider the bigger picture of your overall health and well-being. When you seek medical attention, a doctor will assess your symptoms within the context of your medical history, lifestyle, and personal circumstances. They can identify underlying factors that may contribute to your symptoms and provide comprehensive care that addresses your physical, mental, and emotional needs. This holistic approach can help you achieve optimal health and prevent future health issues. Final thoughts When you sense that something is wrong with your body, it's crucial not to ignore the signs or rely solely on self-diagnosis. Seeking medical attention from a qualified doctor is a prudent decision that can save lives, lead to accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatments, facilitate preventive care, provide professional guidance, and ensure a holistic approach to your well-being. Remember, your health is too precious to gamble with, so trust your instincts, prioritize your well-being, and make that appointment with a doctor when you suspect something might be wrong. Your future self will thank you. At France Surgery, we can help you get a second opinion from our network of medical experts in France. Contact us today to find out more. *Image by Max from Pixabay

How many immune-boosting microbes do people eat?

22/06/2022

Our gut microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, fungi, viruses and germs that live in our digestive tracts – is hugely important when it comes to health, influencing our immune systems, as well as our physical and mental states. But while we know that certain foods, such as fermented produce, yogurts, and non-starchy vegetables can help boost gut health, little is known about how many immune-boosting microorganisms people actually eat on a day-to-day basis as part of their diets. To investigate, researchers estimated the number of microorganisms per gram in more than 9,000 food items, including those high in such organisms, like yogurt, pickles, and kimchi. Then, to see how many people ate foods packed with microorganisms, the researchers took a detail look dietary data collected from 2001 to 2018 for almost 75,000 adults and children. Overall, 26% of adults and 20% of children consumed foods with high levels of microorganisms, researchers reported in The Journal of Nutrition. "When we think of microbes in our food, we often think of either foodborne pathogens that cause disease or probiotics that provide a documented health benefit," study co-author Colin Hill, PhD, of APC Microbiome Ireland at University College Cork, said in a statement. "It is very timely to estimate the daily intake of microbes by individuals in modern society as a first step towards a scientific evaluation of the importance of dietary microbes in human health and well-being," he added. *Image by rhys jung from Pixabay

A one-week social media break helps reduce anxiety, depression - study

09/05/2022

It's become a ubiquitous part of most people's lives, but social media could be driving feelings of anxiety and depression, and taking a break from it for just one week can be beneficial, new research shows. According to the study, which is published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, people who stopped using social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for seven days reported an increased sense of well-being. Moreover, some said they got back around nine hours in their week that they would have otherwise spent scrolling such platforms. “Scrolling social media is so ubiquitous that many of us do it almost without thinking from the moment we wake up to when we close our eyes at night,” Jeff Lambert, the lead study author and a health and exercise psychologist at the University of Bath, said in a statement. “We know that social media usage is huge and that there are increasing concerns about its mental health effects,” he said. “We wanted to see whether simply asking people to take a week’s break could yield mental health benefits.” The researchers now want to investigate whether other groups can benefit from taking social media breaks, including younger people and those with physical and mental health conditions. The team also wants to monitor individuals for longer than a week to see if the benefits last over time. If the results do indeed last, the study authors say we might even see social media breaks being prescribed as an option for people dealing with mental health issues. *Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

AstraZeneca halts COVID-19 trial after participant falls ill

10/09/2020

British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca’s large-scale human COVID-19 vaccine trial has been paused after one of the participants developed an unexplained illness. A spokesperson for AstraZeneca said the pause is “routine” and occurred when the firm’s standard review process was triggered. An independent committee will now review safety data pertaining to the trial. AstraZeneca stressed that an adverse reaction was only witnessed in one study participant, and that pausing trials was a common part of the vaccine development process. No details have been released about the nature of the participant’s illness, but it has been reported that the individual is expected to recover. Right now, all trials of the joint AstraZeneca-University of Oxford developed vaccine, AZD1222, have been halted worldwide, including in the United States, UK, Brazil, South Africa, and India. AZD1222 is one of three COVID-19 vaccines in late-stage Phase 3 trials in the United States. AstraZeneca and eight other drug makers have said they will not seek approval from US government regulators for any vaccine until all data showed it was safe and effective. All of the companies, which include Johnson & Johnson, Merck & Co, GlaxoSmithKline, Novavax Inc, Sanofi and BioNTech, said “the safety and well-being of vaccinated individuals” was their top priority.

Diabetics significantly more likely to die from alcoholism and by suicide, study finds

18/10/2018

The physical health problems associated with diabetes are well understood and publicised. For example, diabetics have an increased risk of developing cancer, kidney disorders and cardiovascular disease. But what about the mental impact of living with diabetes? It’s not something that gets a lot of attention, but the findings of a new study could see it thrust under the spotlight. That’s because the study by researchers from Finland found a worrying connection between diabetes and the risk of someone dying by suicide or alcoholism. According to the study, diabetics are more than 10 times more likely to die as a result of alcoholism – predominantly cirrhosis of the liver – and 110% more likely to commit suicide than the general population. The highest risk was seen among diabetes patients who rely on regular insulin injections to avoid serious health complications. Professor Leo Niskanen, of the University of Helsinki, who led the study, said diabetes patients who have to monitor their glucose levels and administer insulin frequently suffer tremendous mental strain. “This strain combined with the anxiety of developing serious complications like heart or kidney disease may also take their toll on psychological well-being,” he said. Is it time we started talking about the mental health implications of living with diabetes? [Related reading: Type-2 diabetes could actually be detected up to 20 years in advance, researchers say]

Generosity makes you happier, study confirms

18/07/2017

We all know that acts of generosity towards other people make you feel good and provide a happiness boost, but while previous scientific studies have confirmed a link between selflessness and happiness, none have analysed the mechanical link between the two, until now. For their study, Professor Phillipe Tobler and Professor Ernst Fehr, both from the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich (UZH) in Switzerland, split participants into two groups – one that was made up of people who promised to spend money on others (the experimental group) and one that promised to spend money on themselves (the control group). At the end of the four-week study, the researchers found that those individuals in the experimental group reported increased happiness compared to their counterparts in the control group. Going one step further, the researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging to analyse the brain mechanisms that link generous behaviour with increased happiness. They saw that generous decisions activated an area of the brain linked to happiness and the reward cycle. Talking about the findings of the study, Professor Tobler said: “You don’t need to become a self-sacrificing martyr to feel happier. Just being a little more generous will suffice.”

Walnuts can keep age-related health issues at bay

07/04/2016

People have long lauded the health benefits of eating walnuts, but now a new study has found that consuming them on a daily basis can help keep age-related health issues at bay. This week, at a health conference in San Diego, the initial findings of the two-year Walnuts and Healthy Aging (WAHA) study were presented. Involving some 707 healthy adults - who were split into two groups - the clinical trial saw one group eating walnuts for 15% of their daily calorific intake, while the other group ate none. After a year, both groups were found to have gained a similar amount of weight and have similar levels of triglycerides and HDL (otherwise known as 'good' cholesterol). However, the walnut-eating group experienced significant LDL (or 'bad') cholesterol reductions. Dr Emilio Ros, the director of the Lipid clinic, Endocrinology & Nutrition Service at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, which carried out the research in conjunction with Loma Linda University, said: "Acquiring the good fats and other nutrients from walnuts while keeping adiposity at bay and reducing blood cholesterol levels are important to overall nutritional well-being of ageing adults. "It’s encouraging to see that eating walnuts may benefit this particular population." The researchers now want to see whether walnuts have a positive impact on other age-related health issues, such as macular degeneration and cognitive decline.

How a healthy lifestyle after surgery in France can promote longevity of life

28/10/2013

There are so many things to consider when deciding whether to have surgery or not. Then once you have decided go forward with surgery you must make decisions about where to go to have it performed and discussions must be had with your medical or surgical team to make sure your wishes are adhered to. You would be forgiven for thinking that would be the end of your decision making and that it is all then in the hands of the surgeon. However, you do have one major choice after your surgery has been carried out – whether you will live a healthy lifestyle during and after your recovery. The choice to live a healthy lifestyle can have a major impact on your post-surgery life and promote longevity of life in general. Whilst you are staying in hospital you will be given advice and information about how being healthy can help assist your recovery and reduce the chance that further surgery will be required. Research has shown that getting out of bed, walking, eating and drinking as early as possible after surgery has a positive impact on recovery. A healthy diet and general exercise as well as specific exercises described by your medical team will also decrease your recovery time, increase your overall well-being and generally make your life happier, healthier and longer.
