Algerian President Admitted to French Hospital for ‘check-up'

Algerian President Admitted to French Hospital for ‘check-up'308px-President-abdelaziz-bouteflikaThe President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has left a French clinic after a short stay and returned to Algeria. Bouteflika travelled to France for a check-up last Thursday and was discharged on Saturday before boarding the Algerian presidential plane home.

Last year, Bouteflika suffered a stroke and has been plagued by poor health ever since. His recent trip to France on health grounds saw him hospitalised at a private clinic in Grenoble. Reports say that an entire floor of the clinic was set aside for the president to ensure maximum security.

At the time of his stroke in 2013 Bouteflika was immediately rushed for treatment in France and this last trip is one of several health-related visits since.

Algeria holds a firm place in France’s colonial history and Bouteflika is a veteran of the independence conflict that concluded in 1962. However, now 77-years-old, Bouteflika is an increasingly frail leader and his poor health will be being closely watched by Algeria’s various opposition parties.

Bouteflika’s latest visit to France is testament to the world-class health facilities that are available in the country.
